Footprints in the ether.


  As with paper trails, or footsteps in the snow, your voyage through the web pages of the internet leaves your electronic footprint behind you.
  Every web site you visit records who you are 204.117.228.100 (your IP number)
  date and time of your arrival, [01/Dec/1999:05:36:48 +0000]
  pages you viewed, "www.hitc.co.uk"
  Browser compatibility, type and operating system. Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 95)"
  the time of your departure and the page you were viewing when you left and so on.
  This information is used by web masters to count the number of visitors to the page, identify the most popular pages and the length of time a visitors spends viewing the site.

Log files show where you have been... and contain historical information.

 No IP number, you not be using Netscape then...

Well no matter whether you are using Netscape or Explorer...

if you're using Windows 95/98/NT, click start, run, type winipcfg in the box and press return.

The IP number will be the same as your PPP adaptor, unless you have a network card, in which case the number will match that of the network card.
